Rentable Virtual Windows Desktop from Amazon
« on: September 28, 2018, 07:57:48 pm »

A friend/colleague on Facebook (tech guy with great insight) told me he was using this service.

https://aws.amazon.com/workspaces/pricing/

Basically it's a remoted Windows computer that you access from your browser. You could, I suppose, use a cheap Chromebook to access and use Windows in this way.

The cheapest flat monthly cost is $25/mo which works out to $300/year which for a business purpose seems really reasonable and accessible. Or they provide hourly plans if you are on and off irregularly.

That is reasonable for a business. Frankly unless you need something crazy outside of Office - why does anyone need Windows?

If you do accounting where you have an outside accountant, they usually require export files from Quickbookls.    Or maybe you do your own payroll if you are small enough, just a few people.   Although
there is an online version of Quickbooks so you could run it from any OS.

Then there is the mental block issue.  People like us on the board can use other OS's like Linux with ease.  Non-technical people in businesses usually have a mental block against using something like Linux even though they could easily adapt.

Maybe Microsoft's new policies on renting applications will push people to try other options which are free.

I had so much grief last year generated by recovering the data from my crashed Windows computer that I went to Linux and more or less have never looked back. Yeah, I agree.

People can be encouraged to migrate off Windows. Its not as hard as some imagine. When I moved back to Mac I had not been on it for a very long time. The learning curve was there and at times it would frustrate the heck out of me. But I got over it. Now I find Windows the odd one, not the Mac.

The same thing applies to Linux. Its just a matter of learning new stuff and whether you want to do it or not.

When I worked at Bell Labs we barely had any Windows computers except to use MS Office. For everything else we used Unix workstations and small servers. And guess what? We were fine. The rest of Ma Bell would have Windows outages and we just hummed along.
