Stinkbugs are kind of like skunks.  They only release the odor if they are disturbed.  I've never smelled them either but they say never to smash them.  If I can't get them out of the house I flush them.

I pick them them all the time with tissue paper and squash them.  A faint green slime comes out of them, which I've held up to my nose on several occasions to see if it really smells bad, but can't say it does.  OTOH, maybe all my senses are deteriorating.  I know my hearing and eyesight are.

I wouldn't crush them outright. Not in the house, at least.

Many insects release pheromones and other essences when you crush them (example: yellow jackets) that are a war cry or attraction magnet.

And the name "stink bug", really? More people than not think they stink!!!

I usually just carry the bug in a piece of tissue back outside and release it, or flush it down the toilet. That's my "best practice".

I did hear that if you crush them they attract more.  Its my fault, ID.  I brought up stink bugs.  The DC area thread was about hot weather, and bugs are part of it IMO.

The entomologist in the video link that Unix posted said that many people don't think that stink bugs actually stink, but said if you keep one in your hand for some period of time  (which only an entomologist would do) your hand will smell bad afterwards.  The video showed a stink bug excreting drops out of its hind parts.  Maybe that's what would get on your hands and smell bad.  I'm not going to find out.  I'm sure they're going to continue to be a real PITA when they come indoors when it gets cold outside.

Apply for every meat animal - cow, pig, chicken, kangaroo :) , lamb, goat...

And you would be permanently vegan. Not a bad fate.

Seriously, that's really weird. That reminds me of the medical jargon on old Star Trek where they create "retroviruses" that somehow reverse long term conditions.

I'd never want to be a vegan.  If you eat a little bit of everything, you can't go wrong in life.

Back to DC area, how's the weather now?  We're finally cooler after temps in the 90's here in NJ.  I'm so happy!
