Guy On My Project Just Resigned - Got 160K at New Gig - Is The Job Market Hot?

This is roughly 25K than he makes now. The amount blew me away. Granted the guy does have unusual skills - he is a former chemist converted to IT. On my projects he is involved modeling and simulation (data modeling involving R).

I have been told the job market is is very hot.

He is probably in data analytics using R, not data modeling.   And yes that is one of the very hot areas in IT today.   Very few people have the required skill set for that particular job.

Question - is he a FTE employee at the new job or a contractor/consultant?   Makes a difference.   As a FTE, 160K is good depending on the geographic area.  As a consultant, it equates to about $75/hr.

My project is under the generic category "modeling and simulation" and yes we do R and data analytics. He became a salaried consultant for a company that does data analytics. The area is NJ. He was 1099 before and was doing 70/hour. The job at that range includes 2 weeks vacation + medical.

I attribute it to several things for IT people - the economy is booming and Trump has choked the H1B pipeline.

An old coworker I have known for 7 years got canned at his gig.
His confidence level is very high he can find something soon.
He is late 30s, no kids, no debts, no commitments.
