SSD running SUPER hot (according to S.M.A.R.T. utility) - wtf? Advice?

The SSD in my older i7 box is a recently purchased Kingston A400 model - 480GB.

The "Psensor" utility in Linux reports its temperature at a consistent 99C, in other words, almost boiling temp of water.  It is unvarying, the min, max and current value are all 99.

I opened the case and physically felt the side of the drive. It feels warm, not hot to the touch.

The hard drive temp is reported at 38C, with a max and value of of 38, and a min of 37.

It seems like a bogus reading. Is this common?

Yeah, it is common.
I have the same symptoms. You can get precut thermal paste that will act as a heatsink.

I also said in the same sentence that the drive only felt warm to the touch, NOT hot (99C is just under 212F).

I believe this is a bogus reading and the drive's internal sensor is either defective or the utility isn't probing the SSD correctly. I just launched the box after a lengthy power down, long enough to make everything be at room temperature, and the SSD *still* reports 99C while every other component is reading like 20C, such as the HDD.

Ok, I searched and easily found that Kingston has their own SSD monitoring utility. So I will try that.

It appears that the field to read temp from a hard drive is different on an SSD.   So the utility you are reading the temp with is looking at the wrong field on the SSD thus the bad reading.  You need a utility where you can specify which field to read.

I had hddtemp installed already.

This is much more like it, a plausible temperature similar to the hard drive and other components, actually a bit cooler running.

(first reading is the SSD, the second reading is a Seagate Firecuda 2TB internal drive which is the old boot drive.)

gorn-i7-linux gorn # hddtemp /dev/sda
/dev/sda: KINGSTON SA400S37480G: 28°C

gorn-i7-linux gorn # hddtemp /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc: ST2000DX002-2DV164: 34°C

99C could not possibly be right, that's the temperature at which water boils.

I assumed you learned it was warm or hot by touching it. My machine is set up so you take off the top cover and can touch the SSD, it's very easy to access.

LOL. I think Gorn should have a temp measuring gun/pen where he points at it and get the temp reading. I bought one from Home Depot to check my hot water pipe from water heater. I aint touching hot stuff to see how hot it is.

99C or boiling point of water is not third degree burn territory! I'm used to licking a finger and touching my fingertip to the side of a smoker grill to see if it's up to temperature (the finger hisses if it's hot, but I don't hold it on the metal to get a blister off of it. :P )
