Security Clearance

There are many jobs in DC require it and I don't have one! I heard there is a 3 years backlog and you won't get one if you carry high credit cards debt. So our country is overran with 22 illegals, millions of H1B doing work in our country, companies sharing secrets in China. A patriotic American has problem with clearance for a wage earner job...

Crazy logic, don't you think?

It's apparently been that way - lack of reasonably timely access to clearance approval - for years.

Back when I worked in DoD in the early 80s, DISCO (the fed department that handles clearances) took about 4 to 6 months to run a clearance background check for a secret clearance. Most of the time an engineer got hired provisionally subject to finally passing the clearance.

I'm close to an air force base that is a major regional employer. In the early 90s I attended a few hiring events held by base contractors which felt like cattle calls. Later talking to friends I found that basically you had to already have a clearance granted in conjunction with an employer's clearance requiring work in order to be considered for most programmer, engineer or analyst type positions. This situation results in a recently active security clearance being transferred to the person for their work at a new employer  and is far less expensive than paying for new clearance work. Basically, where I live, government contractors already employed who already have clearances get stolen and hired by competitors.

I wonder if you get hired as an employee, does that speed things up? And I'm talking as an employee of the government not a Contracting firm.

I'm positive that gov contractors pay through the nose for all background clearance work. I imagine that the government has its own fast-track and probably wholesale internal pricing. I know none of that, of course. Just guessing that anything is more expensive and more time consuming for an outside entity to buy.
