Linux, free open source if possible.

I want to do web-dev, HTML + CSS + JS for now, and maybe PHP or other back end stuff in time.

Atom seems to be highly recommended by many developers.

Eclipse (an early leader in IDEs) concerns me because it has a reputation for being very difficult to come up to speed on.

Thoughts?

I generally don't code but know tons of people who do. Here all they use is Eclipse/Jenkins because its all Java driven. From just watching them do their thing, Eclipse is brutal. It seems tough to learn and even tougher to get working smoothly. They are always complaining about it as it seems to have endless problems.

It hurts me to say this but Visual Studio Code is really good. I use it on Windows and Linux for html, css, js, and go projects. Don't let the VS name turn you off. VSC isn't bloated (so far at least).

Visual Studio code is good. I like it. It is written with Electron framework and uses Node.js.

All the people I know use Eclipse. I don't do development so no idea. My IDE is the vi editor. And the X-Windows.
