Microsoft Next Strategy - Rent Windows By The Month
« on: September 28, 2018, 02:41:42 am »
https://www.computerworld.com/article/3293429/microsoft-windows/with-daas-windows-coming-say-goodbye-to-your-pc-as-you-know-it.html

"This isn’t about Microsoft forcing us off Windows 7 to Windows 10 as fast as it can (though it has found many ways to push that agenda). This is about Microsoft abandoning the Windows platform as a conventional desktop.

Microsoft is getting ready to replace Windows 10 with the Microsoft Managed Desktop. This will be a “desktop-as-a-service” (DaaS) offering. Instead of owning Windows, you’ll “rent” it by the month.

Someone a while back told me about a service that some vendor like Cisco supplies that's actually a virtual Windows desktop but remoted. It was priced OK per month.

May as well do that if you wind up leasing your desktop's software.

Renting of Software -- Caused by Lack of Innovation
« Reply #4 on: September 29, 2018, 02:56:51 pm »
Adobe and Microsoft were forced to resort to renting software because they both have almost completely STOPPED innovating.

It the old days, each new version of their software had new features that could temp customers into paying for updating to the latest version.  That has not been the case for several years now.

Both companies are no longer capable of justifying getting paid for new and improved products, so they feel forced to find ways to collect money without creating any new wealth or new value.

I think the world would be better off if they both either go out of business or at least get downsized by 90%.

Here is a video on how this happens.

At such a point, better marketing makes a company more successful, NOT better products.

As a result, sales and marketing people get promoted into high level management, NOT people who know how to make great products.

Companies forget what it means to make great products.

The product genius that brought a company to its monopolistic position is rotted out of the company.

This is an exceptionally clear-minded synopsis of the desktop PC market today. Thank you for this. Excellent point.

I think this is a very clear and outstanding observation. If you think about it - what does Windows 10 do that 7 doesn't already do? NOTHING. Microsoft could have very easily left 7's interface intact and just improved the guts of the OS. But oh no, they had to reinvent the wheel.

Adobe is already testing the waters from what I hear. A Company has licensed products but Adobe keeps tightening their grip. Staff use to be able to work remotely, but no more. They also have a limited number of licenses but they use to be able to go to the department or person that needed something done and log in, yes networked workstations, and get their work done. No more. It's now tied to not only that particular person but also to their specific box. (They found that out when they said use my log in and do it yourself.)

All I can say is what a PITA if a box goes down or gets majorly upgraded. Ok, it's kind of like upgrading Windows but this is just an application.

Oh, and they already do rent by the month for the latest features and updates.

And what you say about Windows 7 is also true about Office. How many new features do you really need? They lost that cash cow.

I think for the majority of users they could strip out like 80% of Office's features and nobody would notice.

I use Libre' Writer instead of Word cuz I'm in Linux. It feels like MS Word from 2003. Perfectly functional.

that is an astute observation. I have no idea what Win10 gave me. Just obstacles and less privacy and yet another expense.

There was nothing wrong with Windows 7. Seems they have to come up with the stuff for the sake of coming up with new stuff.
