Musk introduces the Tesla Semi
« on: November 17, 2017, 06:42:17 am »
This has to go in the humor section.

Musk introduces the Tesla semi:   https://news.google.com/news/video/fQvGSkTYJSE

A semi accelerating from 0-60 in 5 seconds (2:20) has to be one of most frightening highway driving scenarios I can think of.

Be Prepared.

These futuristic trucks look like they are carrying bodies away from Soylent Green self-suicide parlors to the nearest food cracker factory.

That would only happen if the cab were bobtailing (no trailer.) A loaded truck will be bound by physics of inertia. The motor is powerful but it'll have its limits.

At 2:40 he says it goes 0-60 with or without a (presumably empty) trailer.  After that there's animation of it loaded with 80,000 pounds and accelerating to 60 mph in 20 seconds.

Musk says Tesla is in this business because 80% of all truck deliveries are 250 miles or less and these trucks go 500 miles without needing a recharge.

When they become self-driving it's going to be very bad news for jobs.

Shows the historical progression of most popular jobs by state from 1978-2014: https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/02/05/382664837/map-the-most-common-job-in-every-state

The slider below the map moves automatically when the graphic first comes up.  When it moves to 2014  most states show truck driver!

He can say anything he likes but physics! Inertia! The acceleration is bound by universal laws. 0-60 in 20 seconds is impressive.

The unloaded cab (bobtail) will accelerate like a race car but doing so has no purpose.

And, the electric drive train still has to be economic compared to diesel. He's still in free market competition on costs, even though Musk is an egomaniac who acts like nothing can compete with his shit.

There is something unique to the electric car, where it immediately throws all the max torque at the drivetrain bypassing all the intermediate levels. Versus an internal combustion engine that has to rev up to a certain point.
That's why the fastest car in the world is electric.  Remember that youtube video, where they build some Toyota POS into an electric monster that kicked the rear end of race cars like Camaro, Porsche, Lambo, etc.

So yeah, I believe his claim. Not sure it's as valid with the load, certainly. But empty - I believe it.

^ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_racing#Classes  Says "Pro Stock" cars, which burn gasoline and look like traditional cars run "quarter-mile times in the 6.4 second range, and speeds over 210 mph", which is about the same as the current EV record:

Quote
The current electric drag racing record is [2] 6.940 seconds at 201.37 mph (324.0736 kph) for a quarter mile (420m).

The "top fuel dragsters" which burn nitromethane are a lot (2x) faster:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pFgQW-Y21M

I am sure it's not miles per gallon but gallons per mile type of thing..

Once those govmt subsidies run out, Tesla is toast. They are not profitable. Their products are geared toward douche affluent people that are eco poseurs.

People wonder why the traditional car companies are not heavily pursing this - its because its not yet profitable.

True enough. But surely you heard how they introduced this new Li-ion battery that charges in a few minutes..

If that's true, then it changes things.
