How goes the Christmas season?
« on: December 09, 2018, 08:39:17 am »
I noticed Ebay and Amazon are having non-stop sales and so do other sites like vitacost dot com (Vitamins and other stuff)

To me this suggests the economy isn't all that hot.

reporting here from the District of Corruption, nothing unusual, same olde. Same as last year, same as 10 years ago. Cold and no freaking snow. I wish we would get some already.
 -5 Centigrade tonight.

Here in Ohio this has been an absolutely shitty, rainy year, and the start of winter promises more of the same. Today and for the next 3 days it is supposed to be DRY which is a NOVELTY this year since about early October here. I was blindsided in November by a sudden instantaneous leaf fall that happened during a violent storm, so I have mounds of rotting wet leaves in the front yard that are normally gone by the first week of December. We have the skies of Seattle and the temperatures of Norway, grrrr.  >:(

LOL

Interesting. Sounds depressing.

I loved Colorado when I lived there. Sunny, kinda cold and snow.  Much different vibe than the east coast, or for that matter, the west coast.

I liked Wisconsin even more. The weather was identical to what I experienced in my childhood. Cool summers, snowy, cold winters.  Rural Wisconsin is beautiful.

I have been worrying about stock market dropping and trade war to pay attention to the weather. It doesn't help when it is getting darker and colder lately. I need warm sunny days to brighten up my spirit. If we go to war with China tomorrow, I will be happy like a clam. I am sick and tired of the slow burning of our civilization.

I think I would be depressed in Ohio. It sounds like the northern version of Virginia - I mean central VA, with Richmond in all of its glory. Northern VA is really a part of DC.

Virginia has no IT jobs whatsoever except for what's in DC area. Charlottesville  and even Richmond are dead zones.

I'm near Annapolis, MD. There are lot of computer jobs if you have security clearance. I don't have and don't want security clearance. I have no desire to be part of the swamp.

Well then, you are a smarter person than I am without a doubt.

Its been very cold here in the northeast. Unusually cold. This time of year its typically in the low 40s/high 30s. This year its already been the 20s and teens. We typically don't see that till January/February.

Just some advice - if you are an American citizen you should get on the DoD gravy train. Everyone else in the DC area is on it, why not you? I appreciate that you have principles but that won't put food on the table, heat and a roof over your head.

I know its hypocritical but thats life.

I have been laid off a bunch of times and will do whats necessary to survive. Retooled myself a bunch of times already. Ideally I would like to retool out of the IT job market and do something else but what am I am going to do being 40+ years old.

Just get on it and learn to live in the swamp ;) .

On Long Island we've had an autumn that set records for rain and now we're having a December that is consistently 10 degrees below normal. The leaves on the bottom were still wet when I cleaned them up. Wet, cold leaves: wonderful.

The job market is insane though. I just saw an advertisement from a local company for 120K to 160K for a mid to senior WPF desktop programmer. It knocked me over.

ilconsiglliere,

I hear you. I will consider it as last resort. I have the same problem as you. I'm 49 and I don't know what I can transition to. IT is all that I have done. What can you transition to outside of IT?

If you figure that out, you let me know ;) .

Have to look outside of IT. My friend grossed 350K selling on Amazon in the last year. About 40% of that is net profit.

That's amazing because Amazon store charges a lot of money to sellers. I'll tell you a figure. Let see how I can say it without reviewing the confidential info. OK. I won't say what kind of product it is. Amazon takes 40% of revenue from this company that sells stuff on Amazon. That's the agreement. The revenue was around 20 million-ish per year. How can Amazon take this much? It's simple. It is their store and it is their customers. If you want to sell something to their customers, you will have to pay.
