Host shopping again
« on: December 20, 2018, 06:34:05 pm »
Have host gator but like all hosts, the price goes up after the initial offer. This is for hobby use only, so I don't want to spend a lot but also hate the price increases. Any suggestions for low use / low cost hosting? Didn't we talk about a 'pay as you go' hosting here? Any good?

There's plenty to pick from but I'm wondering if anyone has a favorite?

If you're interested in and capable of maintaining a VPS (cloud based Linux instance), I really like the value provided by OVH.com. I run this board and also my own blog, on an OVH plan that costs $7.95/month and provides 4 GB ram and 20 GB drive capacity (I think.)

I used to have a Stablehost.com plan. It was $34 per year and provided decent capacity (unlimited domains, maybe 5-10 GB storage) on shared hosting. StableHost is the lowest cost "decent" shared host I know of.

The other choice which I still use (for deplorablecoder.club, and to host some personal images) is nearlyfreespeech.net. If you don't get a lot of traffic or need a lot of online storage, you can host websites with PHP and MySQL for pennies per month because they only charge for resource usage, not monthly. NearlyFreeSpeech is the place to host when you need to more or less "park" a functioning LAMP website that doesn't get much traffic.

Thanks! I couldn't remember the name for nearlyfreespeech.net It's for one parked domain and a Wordpress site.

Maybe the "middle of the road" option is the best idea?

Hmm, I've run a VPS and prefer it over shared hosting (from what I remember). Just a different mindset but could I get back to running one? It's been years and it's amazing what you forget.

And the quoted prices are the ongoing cost and not the initial bait and switch offer?

You might look at Ionos (formerly known as 1&1). Deals constantly change, but in general you can get two domain names, lots of storage, and as many email addresses as you could ever want for something like $10/month. See https://www.ionos.com/.
