Ever had your reviews spiked by a moderator?

My sister had a negative comment about a product removed by an Amazon moderator. She said it was accurate information presented in a polite way, but they spiked it anyway. This kind of surprised me because you certainly see some con's presented in the reviews. But I guess sometimes sales must take priority.

Once I entered a good technical comment at Quora based on my own experience they spiked. I would guess it's because I haven't filled in personal information about myself into my profile. I thought the quality of the comment spoke for itself. I haven't commented at Quora since.

I had a friend whose negative product comment Walmart deleted. She said it didn't bother her because perhaps she should have phrased it better.

A few times when I've posted extremely emotionally reactionary reviews I've had them moderated away. Generally, no.

Yelp is one site that (so far) where I have had all of my reviews see the light of day, but Yelp has an extemely poor reputation for spiking reviews because of their computer algorithm, which they also don't explain. Moderated reviews go into the category "[blank] other reviews that are not currently recommended" and a visitor has to click through (it used to be you had to answer a captcha to see them!!!)

It's Kafkaesque because they don't tell you why your review was hidden and it's a shadow ban (the slimiest of all types) because they don't even tell you that you've been banned. Of course, social sites like Yelp have big spam problems so they don't tell you why, because that arms the spammers with info they don't want them to have.

If I ever have more than 1 review not be publicly visible at Yelp, I'll nuke every one of my reviews there as payback.

I have had reviews removed from Amazon, Ebay and Glassdoor.

Amazon about a year ago removed any books questioning the narrative of the Holocaust. I didnt post anything positive about the book I read. All I said was that the narrative they tell us does not make sense when faced with facts. Some things were obviously IMPOSSIBLE.

They also removed a review about the rationale for the Iraq war. Ie. Where are weapons of mass destruction? We destroyed a whole country for exactly what reason?

There have been other things on Amazon. I no longer leave reviews for anyone. I dont care and its a waste of time.

And, yes Glassdoor edits reviews of employers BECAUSE they receive $$ from them in the form of advertising and job ad placement. There is nothing impartial about them. I posted some negative reviews of some places I worked and everything I posted was true. They deleted my post and told me that I needed to take the high road with my experiences, "to more positive". I guess being abused and treated like shit is supposed to be ok in corporate America. You arent supposed to complain, suck it up snowflake.

Some people love the attention and at a less pathological level it can feel empowering to make your voice heard. I know a guy, a former software consulting who is an absolute douchebag, who has some huge following on Yelp. Yelp has a created path for Yelpers to achieve fame as "food critics" through recognition at events.

When the site starts spiking your reviews it's really time to check out and stop helping the assholes.

I agree - why provide free content for their web site. What do I get in return? Especially for rich mega companies. This has been my view about Facebook for a long time - YOU are the content. Why should I BE YOUR PRODUCT. F*CK YOU.

Its just like self checkout in the store - I said this to the manager one day after I had a problem:

I am doing you a favor by self checking myself out should I get a discount because I am doing the work of the cashier. Since I am ringing myself up and bagging the item I should get 5% off the total price? What do you think?

The manager stood there dumb founded like a deer in the headlights.

When I shop for something seriously, I look first at the MOST NEGATIVE reviews. Because, as a mature intelligent adult, I know that N-O-T-H-I-N-G is perfect. Nothing. I WANT TO KNOW THE FLAWS. Negative reviews calibrate me on what to expect in real life.

What's often left are fanboys and paid shill reviews. Which are instantly recognizable and which provide NO value. They are DRIVEL as far as I am concerned when I have $ in my hand ready to spend.

To me few or no negative reviews are a sign of tampering.

Same here.  I immediately go to 1-star reviews and then work my way up to 3-stars.  If there is no agreement about flaws or possible show-stoppers I then proceed to look at the positive reviews.

I don't leave many reviews -- only if I am very pleased or very pissed about something.  I look at it as a community service.

I do the EXACT same thing. I am not interested in the cheer leading and fanboys. Tell me whats wrong with it ;) .

I've just done my part and submitted a 1-star review for a really shitty product I received from Amazon.  Also, since the product was not what was advertised I left the seller a 1-star feedback.   >:(

I just gave something 5 stars.  I think you have to balance your reviews.  Too many 1-stars and you may not be taken seriously.

On any review site if I see a review that's pivotal to my buy decision, I'll try to inspect the review history of the account attached to the review. I like to see a balance.

If it's someone who has only 5 star/high reviews of various products, I start to assume that it's a shill.

Likewise I don't totally trust curmudgeons. I'm the only completely negative person that anyone should trust.
