Windows 10 update 1809 hosed networking
« on: October 04, 2018, 03:43:22 pm »
There we go. What a massive POS. At first I though surely just my wi-fi is down. No, turns out all other devices are OK. Just the 1809 I just applied.

I booted off the mirror I keep just for that reason and it works fine - but also wants to update and there is no way to disable update. What a nightmare.

I was hoping to avoid migration to Linux (I deal with it to the Nth degree at work) but this is really the last straw for me. This isn't some malware or virus, this is the official MS update.  Unacceptable isn't the right term here.

I reinstalled the driver for the networking card and it's back to normal apparently.

At least I haven't discovered anything else broken yet. It wasn't 1809 per se but the wi-fi card patch. Apparently the vendor screwed up and MS stupidly included it without testing.

I also had to flush the DNS:

ipconfig /flushdns

after the driver install. *sigh* what an idiot system.

I think I will pursue CentOS as apparently it's the closest to the Redhat Enterprise I have ... and uses LVM by default, which is nice.   I have 4 SSDs and I need to tell the installer to install on a specific one, as crappy as the Win10 system is, I do not want to overwrite it, not yet.
