New Browsers
« on: December 14, 2017, 09:17:44 am »
Some new browsers are on the scene. Anybody using them? Your experiences?

1-  Firefox Quantum version (if you have v 56 or above you've got it, it automatically installs as an update)
2- Brave (mainly for privacy, see www.brave.com/index/ )
3- TOR Browser (a privacy-optimized version of Firefox, you can use it without using the TOR network if you want -- see http://privatoria.net/blog/tor-through-proxy/)

I've found Quantum better like they claim, mainly when running browser scripts.

Great, new browsers for some e-commerce or government site you need to use to cause the site to complain and block you because "your browser is unsupported or out of date."

Don't get me wrong, choice is good, but so many entitles are completely against personal choice these days.

Yes, these privacy-oriented browsers especially seem to fail just when you need them to work the most.

I always keep one browser totally open (to scripting and everything else) to ensure I can get on those sites if I need to.

I just installed Waterfox on my Mac because Firefox took it upon themselves to update my browser and disable all my plugins. And oh by the way all those plugins you love and use are NO LONGER COMPATIBLE! Thanks so much Firefox. Hey Mozilla people why don't you do all us a favor and go gargle on broken glass.

Regardless I installed Waterfox and it works GREAT. Waterfox is the Firefox source code stripped down to the bones. They removed a ton of garbage and spying. And guess what? ITS FASTER. Needless to say I uninstalled Firefox. Only thing is Waterfox is 64 bit only both on Windows and Mac.

https://www.waterfoxproject.org

Disabled Encrypted Media Extensions (EME)
Disabled Web Runtime (deprecated as of 2015)
Removed Pocket
Removed Telemetry
Removed data collection
Removed startup profiling
Allow running of all 64-Bit NPAPI plugins
Allow running of unsigned extensions
Removal of Sponsored Tiles on New Tab Page
Addition of Duplicate Tab option
Locale selector in about:preferences > General

I also have Brave which works well but has so weirdness with the interface and the way it behaves. But it seems to be fast. Here is the reality, I don't like the trend with these browsers that are not open source. They are continually adding features and bloat. Who wants this shit? NO ONE. I want a browser that is light, fast that works on the web. NOTHING ELSE. I don't want Mozila's pocket, nor Chrome's sync or any of that garbage that they put in. And oh yeah - I want my freakin menu back - I don't want shit hidden that I can't find it.

Thanks but outside of Safari I don't want to use Firefox nor Chrome. Anything that is NOT open source I don't trust any longer. The Mozilla people aligned themselves with George Soros and Chrome is Google. Thanks but Google does not need to know any more about me.

Thanks for the info! I clearly have an outdated Firefox version with most scripting turned off and as noted above, it's a pain at times. I'm amazed with how much crap and scripting are on some sites. I guess it makes sense to off-load your server but at the same time I just want a clean, simple site that doesn't need tons a scripts just to display their home page.

There are some other browsers out there that I have heard the IT dorks talk about a lot:

Vivaldi - this one is related to both Opera/Chrome as it uses the same rendering engine.

https://vivaldi.com/?lang=en_US

Chromium - this one is related to Chrome but is open source.

Chromium is what's available on Linux that acts and looks like Chrome. I have it installed. It's exactly like Chrome from a Chromebook or from Windows.

Thanks for the info. I'd like to try Chromium because Chrome/Chromium have a good reputation for being fast.

But even after googling, I wasn't able to get a straight answer on privacy.

The answers seem to be "no privacy" (www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/34tc2f/how_safe_is_chromium_privacy_wise/),
"some privacy" (www.howtogeek.com/202825/what%E2%80%99s-the-difference-between-chromium-and-chrome/),
and "good privacy" (http://lifehacker.com/ungoogled-chromium-strips-away-the-privacy-invading-fea-1787139870).

Beats me which is accurate.
