How many H1B's are in the U.S. ?

Seems like a simple question, but the officially accurate answer is -- the U.S. govt doesn't know.

H1Bs are issued for 3 years and can be extended for 3 more. The "caps" or maximum issued varies by year.

I've found estimates of H1Bs in the U.S. right now ranging from a low of about 450,000, to a high of 800,000.

Estimates of the total size of the IT labor force in the US vary too (since one can define an IT worker differently). US Census bureau pegs it at 4.6 million as of 2014.

The problem with trying to track the number of H1B's is that the US loses track of the people that overstay their visas.  We haven't enforced those laws for years and the result is that there are a lot more H1Bs than there should be.  That will change under President Trump when he forces Congress to deal with immigration reform in 2018.  Our Congress has been looking the other way at visa violations for at least 20 years, if not longer, because business likes the cheap labor.

Too Many!!!

Each H1B Visa is good for 3 years plus a 3 year extension.

So it's at least 6x the annual quota. which itself seems to be "accidentally" passed on a regular basis.

Have to make Trump aware of this. He seems to be the only president that showed any interest in correcting these kinds of situations.

We should put them all on a Blockchain and the "mining" would consist of making a list of all of them who have passed the expiration date and have not left the country.
This could be done on any plain PC and there would be a lot of volunteers to do it.

All payments to them would be required to go through a central clearing house and when their Visa expires they would be blocked.

They would be required to have an updated address of residence at all times. when their Visa expires and there is no record of them leaving the country a visit could be made and if they are not at that address an arrest warrant would be immediately issued.

They would not even need extra staff. Part of the H1B application fee could go to populating a fund that would pay Unemployed Americans to work at making sure that all these details are followed up on.

Its a lie that the govmt doesn't not know how many there are. Its complete and total bullshit. Every visa has a number and they are telling me they don't know exactly how many they issued and are in use? Come on, than I have some swamp land to sell you.

They don't want you to know because the public would be enraged and its bad for business.
