My sister shot in Boothbay Harbor, Maine with a sub $300 Samsung phone. Pretty amazing if you ask me.



Considering the small sensor and lens its very sharp.

The technology is getting better and better. Its not a DSLR but for most its pretty good. I know I keep posting this stuff but the pictures these things are producing just blows me away. And it lives in your pocket.

The main and only significant issue I've had with phone cameras is their lack of manual control which is a problem mainly during extreme lighting or motion conditions. For instance, when taking videos, the auto focus tracks the wrong things when used in low light (such as taking pictures of Christmas light displays at night.) I have one video that has superb sound but the focus jumps around as different parts of the light display switch on and off with the music. I know I probably had some "infinity lock" setting at my disposal I should have learned about.

Otherwise considering the tiny "cavity" used within the camera for the focal plane of the lens, and the teensy moving parts, these cell phones are truly a modern marvel.

LG v20 has one huge advantage, it has a removable battery.  I get these ZeroLemon 10,000 mAh cells, they last for almost 2 days.

I think it's amazing as well, especially when you consider what early digital cameras looked like and the quality you got. Still have one of those bricks laying around here. I wonder if it still works?

I have two pet peeves about phone cameras that makes me want to carry a "real" camera if I'm intentionally going out to shoot photos. First most phone cameras are wide angle and don't zoom in much. Second I like pressing a real button that I know when I pressed it, it took the shot. I've had problems pressing that virtual button repeatedly trying to get the shot. Sometimes you're "in the moment" taking pictures only to later realize half of them are missing. Now maybe that's just my dry cracked fingers but that's annoying.

As for the technology, it's amazing. Full manual control would be nice but I keep telling myself, it's a phone, not a camera. Though with that said, what constitutes a camera today? As a point and shoot, it's pretty darn good.

Digital cameras became sort-of affordable for amateurs in the late 90s. But (I think) the microelectronics necessary - high speed compact CPUs, image CCDs, and memory - were still almost as expensive as during the bad old pre-Windows 95 days. Do any camera phones have ANY optical zoom, which is what you're talking about? Optical zoom lenses are a quantum more complicated than fixed focus lenses. They also demand a lot of physical space for focusing and zooming. And phones are very thin.

Tactile feedback or clicky buttons are another matter. Manufacturers don't want to put moving buttons on anything because they increase manufacturing costs and are failure prone.

First, interesting attachment. I've also seen some "fixed lens zoom" lenses as well, but you get what you paid for.

Totally agree with pricing and quality. Just like computers, once everything fell in place, prices dropped and performance excelled.

And yes, I'm gripping about optical zoom but again, if you really want that, then go buy a "real" camera. Same with real buttons.

In short, I wish I had one of today's ulta-thin phones with a camera when my kids were growing up. The things you can do are amazing.

Supposedly (I saw this in a photo site comments section) the iPhone X has dual  lenses. One is normal/wide angle and the other is telephoto. So that's how the problem of phone camera focal length is solved today.


Dual lens phone cameras are becoming very common in the middle and upper end of the market. I see some phones with this for < $200.


That's the only practical optical telephoto option that is available in a phone. Phones are just too thin to cram in a decent zoom lens.

I thought it was pretty interesting. Its not a traditional zoom lens by any means but for something that rides in your pocket, not so bad.

This year Huawei came out with the P20 Pro which has 3 lenses on the back:
